What is tongue tie?
A tongue tie is a tight band of tissue under the tongue that restricts its movement
Why is it a problem?
For a baby it causes difficulty latching therefore restricting the amount of milk baby can get from the breast. This may lead to weight loss, jaundice, excessive wind and poor sleep
For mum it causes damaged, misshapen nipples, engorgement or mastitis, pain and dread of feeding and eventual loss of supply

Is it common?
Its thought to affect 1 in 10 babies
Is the division painful?
Its thought to be about as painful as vaccinations.
Will it bleed?
There will be some blood as the tie will be cut with blunt ended sharp scissors. Usually a few drops. Pressure on the wound followed by feeding will help stop any bleeding and help the wound to heal.
Will it take long to heal?
The wound under the tongue is diamond shaped and looks like a small mouth ulcer. Healing takes between 2-5 days but refashioning and resolving of any scar tissue may take 2-4 weeks
Will I notice a difference straight away?
For most babies the effect can be felt very quickly but this will depend on many things such as the age of the baby and any damage to your nipples. You will be given some customised exercises to help improve babies latch and positions that may help
